Round Town: What’s on for September in Melbourne
Art As Therapy
Finishes on 25th September, National Gallery of Victoria (free)
This self-guided tour curated by philosophers Alain de Botton and John Armstrong from The School of Life takes you through works in the NGV International collection, creating new contexts and asking big questions. If you’re curious about the therapeutic effect of art and what it says about our assumptions of ourselves, society and the way we view art in galleries, dive into this experience on a chilly morning and see where the journey takes you. If you’re left hungry for more big ideas, head to The School of Life’s Melbourne outpost at 669 Bourke Street.
Melbourne Spring Fashion Week
30th August – 7th September, Various Locations
With summer on the horizon, get a head start and learn what Melbourne’s trendsetters are doing on and off the runway as this week long event takes over the city. Unlike its northern hemisphere counterparts, MSFW is open to the public so you can go from scanning the runway to shopping the looks in Melbourne’s laneways.
If fashion folk aren’t your type, free events such as yoga, music concerts and beauty workshops are all part of the fun.
Rave of Thrones
4th September, The HiFi Bar
Whether you’re a diehard Game of Thrones fan or just like to get down and dirty on the dancefloor, Rave of Thrones blends the two together for night to remember. It’s all thanks to Kristian Nairn, he of the ‘Hodor’ fame who happens to moonlight as a DJ after dark. Bringing his anticipated show to Australia for the first time, this is set to be one weird, awesome party.
14 Hrs of Sci Fi Classics
Saturday 6th September, Valhalla Cinema
Do you love science fiction? Love it enough to binge 6 movies in one go? Cult film lovers Valhalla Cinema have put together a blockbuster selection of some of the greatest sci-fi classics from the past 40 years for their latest mega-marathon. If you’re a secret sci-fi geek, you’ll be in perfect company with this crowd.
Korean Film Festival
9th – 16th September, ACMI
As one of the most successful film landscapes of the past decade, Korea is developing a reputation as one of the most dynamic and exciting film industries. Find out what the fuss is all about and check out a flick when the 5th KOFFIA rolls into Melbourne in September. There are blockbusters, romances and arthouse gems to be devoured. And don’t worry – each film screens with subtitles.
Til Sunday 28th September, ACCA
Get lost and wander the neon landscape of Optical Mix, a collaborative exhibition that brings together works using light, kinetics and movement. Playing on the concepts of perception and vision, the collection is a love affair to the study of light in its myriad of forms. Bright, delicate, flashy and sometimes psychedelic, the exhibition brings together both local and international artists to create an illuminated wonderland that’s perfect for a rainy spring day.
