The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia’s oldest public art galley, with a history spanning 150 years. In that time they have amassed a 65,000 piece collection, including the world’s largest selection of Australian Art. The NGV’s collection also includes a diverse range of art from all over the world, dating back thousands of years, from Egyptian artifacts and Classical pottery to Andy Worhol’s ‘Self Portrait no.9’ and contemporary couture from Australia’s own Toni Maticevski. The ‘Australian Contemporary Art’ collection also nurtures the country’s most talented emerging artists.
The focal point of Melbourne’s cultural precinct, international exhibitions from all over the world come to find a temporary home at NGV. A highlight in the NGV calendar is the annual ‘Winter Masterpieces’ exhibition, which showcases some of the most iconic works in art history, many of which are rarely seen outside Europe. Recent exhibitions have included Monet, Renior, Vermeer, Dali, Picasso, and Klimt. All ‘Winter Masterpieces’ collections are exclusive to Melbourne.
