Despite some initial controversy about its cubic architecture, Federation Square is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Melbourne. This is because year-round it's abuzz with activity, hosting over 2,000 cultural events each year (that's an average of 5 per day!). On any given day you might find street performers and acrobats, film screenings, talks, sporting events, food and wine tastings, concerts, fashion shows and festivals, many of which are mirrored on the big screen. There's even the occasional world-record attempt. The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the Melbourne Writers Festival and the city's annual New Year's celebrations are just some of the more notable events that take place in Fed Square throughout the year.

Federation Square also contains the ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) and the Ian Potter Centre, a section of the NGV dedicated to Australian art. Around the edges of the square, a selection of cafes, restaurants and bars provide a wide range of dining options, many of which overlook the picturesque Yarra River boating sheds.
