Late 2012 will see the first-ever Cockatoo Island Film Festival, a five-day event that promises to be the largest showcase of Australian cinema in the world. Building on the success of the Dungog film festival, around 15,000 people are expected to attend, viewing 200 Australian and 100 international films.
Once home to imperial convicts, Cockatoo Island will now house six temporary cinemas screening full-length features, documentaries, short films, television, unfinished works and digital content. Education programs, development workshops and student film projects will complement the program and run throughout the year. “Being able to see Australian films in a really dinky-di Australian context ...adds to the whole experience” Geoff Bailey, Executive Director of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust told the Sydney Morning Herald.
